Our parents, Clay and Sue, discovered this piece of property over 35 years ago. With their shared vision and expertise in homebuilding, they weaved their love of all things Southwest, horses, hunting, fishing, and outdoor sports to create what is now known as The Ranch at Red Oak.
A turquoise present created a curiosity in Sue’s heart that spanned a lifetime of respecting, learning, and developing a kindred spirit with all things Southwest. Sue studied Native American culture and incorporated her experiences from many trips out West, where history, colors, and the Navaho Indians captivated her.
Their homestead, formerly known as Fox Den Farm, is a tribute to her passion for Southwestern culture, where textures, materials, nature, landscapes, lighting, and architectural elements were incorporated in every detail of the design.
The thoughtful site plans incorporated their deep love and stewardship of nature and horses, This helped them build their vision of sprawling pastures, rolling hills, horses, dogs, the pond, the barns, two training rings, beautiful oaks, rose bushes and so many blooming trees!
Clay and Sue traveled the United States becoming top stars on the National Team Penning circuit. So this farm became a home for their cattle for practicing team penning and holding Team Penning events.
Sue was known as the experienced and strategic rider while Clay was known as the fearless Cowboy, rodeo rider.
FAST FORWARD TO 2023
Two years after losing Mom, Dad decided to embark on a new journey and purchased a piece of land to build a new home (about a mile away from The Ranch).
He has a move-in date in February 2024.
Dad has passed the reins as they say to us, the next generation, and we are taking over the re-imagining of the farm, The Ranch at Red Oak. We've been busy enovating, redesigning, and restaging some of the interiors so we can open our home with its 50+/- acres to our guests.
Currently, there are five horses grazing and blessing us along with a full-time Ranch Hand.
The Why Behind Keeping The Ranch
It is simple.
We want to preserve our parents’ legacy, allow our horses to stay in their natural habitat, and share EXPERIENCES with others who want a unique one-of-a-kind Southwestern Ranch warmth during a weekend for a special occasion (weddings, reunions, graduations, tournaments, golfing, concerts, water activities on the James River) as well as a destination “BASE CAMP” get-away for families who want to explore Central Virginia, Richmond, Local and nearby Wineries, the James River and so much more!
We welcome you for your special occasion and/or vacation and we know first-hand how important it is to treasure time with family and friends.
